a recent study by koh and colleagues publishedin the journal arthroscopy highlighted another source of stem cells, the infrapatellar fatpad of the knee. the studied 18 patients ranging in age from 421 to 69 years. each patientunderwent an arthroscopic knee debridement for osteoarthritis. at the same time, fatwas harvested from the infrapatellar fat pad under the kneecap. stem cells were isolated,then mixed with platelet-rich plasma (prp) and injected into the knees. significant improvementin symptoms, and mri cartilage thickness were seen. i'm reminded by that dilemma when yourwife asks, "honey, does this dress make me look fat?"
